December 17, 2004: SOLSTICE SONG

Say goodbye to the winter blahs. A lovely trio is gracing the SAGA gallery on December 17 with "Solstice Song," an evening of captivating classical, tradtional and Christmas music that will warm your heart and lift your spirits in these short days.

The host of "mid-season" concerts in past years, local violinist Rhiannon Schmitt is being joined by Salmon Arm's Anita Liebich on piano and the Okanagan's Caroline Mackay on celtic harp and voice. Schmitt is best known as the owner and teacher of award-winning Fiddleheads Violin School in Canoe and as a promoter of violin and fiddle music with the Shuswap Violin Society. In addition to playing in various folk, jazz and contemporary rock groups, Schmitt has played first violin with symphony orchestras in Kamloops, Rossland, and Dawson Creek. A versatile and passionate perfomer, she was recently featured fiddling at the Shuswap Theatre's "Time on the Waters" with James Murray as well as several recent CD releases.

Originally from Salmon Arm, pianist Anita Liebich studied piano and chamber music at Capilano College and UBC to complete her degree.  A proficient artist, she completed her Bachelor of Music in 2002, graduating with the highest academic standing in the School of Music for her year.  Since graduating she has performed with several choirs and vocalists in Vancouver.  Happy to be back in her hometown, Liebich is teaching piano for the Shuswap Community Music Academy in addition to performing with local groups and ensembles.

Caroline Mackay is well-known in Western Canada for her widely travelled performances of Celtic Harp and Song.  Her dynamic vocal range, from dusky ballads and jazz to pure Celtic imagery, and harp playing, from classical, Latin, folk and flamenco, make her an enthralling performer. Her recent tours included California and Texas and New Zealand and her 7 CDs are distributed around the globe. Besides her performing career, she teaches harp at the Vernon and Kelowna Community Music Schools.

Mackay's harp trio, Anamchara, is not playing Salmon Arm this December, making this special concert event a one-time chance to see "The Harp Lady" in trio with with violin and piano. The audience will enjoy delightful violin and piano music by Schubert, Dvorak, Beethoven and tradtional and original music for harp. The evening will also feature a unique arrangement of the Pachelbel Canon in D for violin, piano and harp and ethereal Christmas carols on these heavenly instruments.

The concert has been moved up a half an hour to allow for the arrival of the Christmas Train afterwards, just a quick stroll down the street to the tracks. The music begins at 7:00 PM the evening of Friday, December 17 at the SAGA Gallery, Salmon Arm. Tickets for this enchanting event can be purchased in advance from Wearabouts (250-832-5100) or at the door: $14 adults, $8 students.
